Review It + sewing advice: Design-It-Yourself Clothes by Cal Patch

The Kathy dress I'm dreaming about wearing all fall/winter.

I checked Design-It-Yourself Clothes: Patternmaking Simplified out from the library and knew almost instantly that I needed to own it!  A must have book for anyone with their own ideas for altering, adjusting, making, designing etc their own clothing.

I am aware one of my degrees is in textile and apparel design but I was never able to take a patternmaking course. Very disappointing.  It simply did not fit in my schedule each semester.  Despite that fact I did a ton of sewing and even without the proper instruction (which is often the case) I made my own patterns.  You learn a lot along the way.

But I digress.  This is a fantastic book!  It features styles that are in line with my taste so I'm finding myself wanting to make every design from the basic skirt (definitely without those bunnies and a little longer-yikes) to the Kathy dress (which I want to wear all fall and winter.  It's the light blue one you see up there).   Afterward I'd certainly be on my way to wearing only the clothes that I make.

Here I go digressing again.  This book just gets me so pumped up for sewing I can hardly stand it!  It is lacking sewing instructions so if you are still a novice you will need an additional text to help explain the process of construction too.  I recommend the New Complete Guide to Sewing (Readers Digest) which I think contains everything you will ever need to know about sewing (my instructor's were right, I will have this book for the rest of my life).  It can be a bit over whelming so find a quiet corner, have a cup of tea, take a few breaths and prepare yourself for some practice runs.  A newer book that is making waves for it's ease of use and laid-back style is Sew U: The Built by Wendy Guide to Making Your Own Wardrobe.  I've also checked this one out and like it but I simply don't need to add it to my collection as the readers digest does the job.  I'm off my soap box now and hopefully off to do some patternmaking and sewing!
